19th Gumbekovi dani awarded the play "Djevojke s rogovima"

The play Djevojke s rogovima by Teatar &TD of the University of Zagreb Student Centre has won a special award at this year's Gumbekovi dani! Well done, team!

Directed by Kristina Grubiša with dramaturgy by Karla Leko, actresses Mia Bujan, Ema Šunde and Dorotea Ilečić Sever, accompanied on piano by Viktor Čižić, bravely and inspiringly convey the stories of Frida Kahlo, Dora Maar and Mileva Einstein — women whose talents were often overshadowed by their husbands.

The judging panel of the 19th Gumbekovi dani awards a special recognition to the production by Teatar &TD of the University of Zagreb Student Centre, DJEVOJKE S ROGOVIMA, directed by Kristina Grubiša with dramaturgy by Karla Leko — an original project drawing on three novels by Slavenka Drakulić: Frida ili o boli, Dora i Minotaur, and Mileva Einstein, teorija tuge. Mia Bujan, Ema Šunde and Dorotea Ilečić Sever very subtly, gently, yet bravely and resolutely — at times even provocatively — recreate the lives of three women who, despite their exceptional talents and personalities, remained in the shadow of their husbands, drawing on their own professional and life experiences to build their characters. Excellently costumed, in very well-conceived stage wardrobes that offer them lavish transformations of identity, they gradually inhabit the characters of a painter, a photographer and a scientist, while always remaining themselves. Presenting the stories of Frida Kahlo, Dora Maar and Mileva Einstein, they move with dignity through their lives and across the stage, dancing and singing to the superb piano accompaniment of Viktor Čižić. A highly topical production, imbued with meditative currents and deep sorrow, it opens up themes of the rift between women's need for greater involvement and the real-life personal and professional impossibilities of moving away from the margins. Treading the unstable boundary between reason and emotion, trying to find their own space, their characters sink almost into oblivion while Diego Rivera, Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein prevail — yet we hope that such accomplished young actresses will never be forgotten.
